https://nintendoeverything.com/sonic-fr ... -unlocked/“Normally in Sonic games you’ll encounter a boss and you’ll fight them as regular, blue Sonic. In Sonic Frontiers, there will be bosses that blue Sonic can’t even scratch. But if he collects and uses all seven Chaos Emeralds, he can become Super Sonic and then battle those bosses. Becoming Super Sonic will be the only way to fight them.”
“Up until now, in Sonic games, Super Sonic would only appear against the last boss. Imagine if the first boss in Sonic Frontiers is as strong as those bosses,” the director said.
The bulk of the time spent playing Sonic Frontiers was spent running fast through the various open zones, and while it is a big departure from what Sonic fans may be used to from the series, I have to say that I’m officially fully on board for it. In a weird way, I kind of liken it to a Tony Hawk game. It’s that same feeling of chaining a revert to a manual, linking that to a grind, taking that grind over a gap, acing a special trick or two, and then sticking the landing.

https://nintendoeverything.com/sonic-bo ... ar-at-all/Iizuka’s comments came about during an interview with Shacknews. When asked if the team was inspired by Breath of the Wild, he said:
“From the development (team’s) perspective, they’re going out and making an action game. So when they think about Breath of the Wild, they see Breath of the Wild definitely as a role-playing game, and it’s not similar at all to the action game that they’re making. Yeah there is the same freedom and element of freedom that has been applied to Breath of the Wild as a role-playing game, and they’re taking the linear high-speed action Sonic game and implementing freedom into there, but when we think about, ‘Is it an open world game? Is it similar to Breath of the Wild?’, a lot of people on the team love the Zelda series, they love Breath of the Wild, they’ve played it, but to them, they don’t really see a similarity between the games.”
